In these uncertain days, there is Maria Popova’s 100 Divinations for Uncertain Days: An Almanac of Birds. You can read the story of its creation here. This week, I mused on flamingos.
Flamingo
Â
under the surface
of the present
exists a sea
of possibility
Â
to reach it
a person must
wade in the muddy
rivers of change
and traverse the uncertain
without sinking

And here is a more child-friendly poem:
let’s pink together
let’s feather and flock
we’ll talk, walk
in lockstep–
dance our way
through muddy waters
of change

Patricia Franz writes picture books and poetry. She believes children, dogs, and sourdough have a lot to teach us about life, joy, and wonder. She has raised two boys, four dogs, and holds a master’s degree in Theology with a focus on children’s spirituality. Patricia, her husband, her Bernese Mountain dog, Bonny, and her sourdough starter split their time between the Arizona desert and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Patricia, I am loving “pink” as a verb! xo
Me, too! This is very kid-appealing.
Patricia, it was fascinating to read the story of how Maria Popova created her 40 divination cards to make 40 decks for 40 loved ones on her 40th birthday. That delighted me. I love how her flamingo card influenced you, and especially the one for children. Delightful!
Oh my, I love what you’ve written using flamingos, Patricia, connecting with Maria Popova’s wisdom. I do receive The Marginalian, an important gift she offers, always one to ponder. I am guided often by remembering that change can be good, so I wrestle myself to take the next step. Thank you!
I love the phrase “muddy change.” I also love the title “Let’s Pink Together”!
Wonderful to read your flamingo poems inspired by Popova (wasn’t familiar with her 100 Divinations — will look for it!). Also love the use of pink as a verb. 🙂
“Let’s pink together/let’s feather and flock” pulled me right in with it’s joyous rhythm. Guess I’m a kid at heart. Thank you!
The only way through the muddy waters of change (back to a civilized democratic nation, one hopes) will be TOGETHER. Let’s link arms and wade in.
Oh, the muddy waters of change are always with us, from childhood onward. These are little masterpieces, Patricia.
“Let’s feather and flock” – so love that! Thanks for keeping us all in the pink this week, Patricia. (My Florida fam has a decades-old tradition of “flamingo-ing” each other; some of the antics were pretty elaborate back in the day!)
Patricia, I always love reading your poems. Favorite lines that brightened my Sunday morning:
