30 Poems in 30 Days with 30 Forms

Ode – A Praise Poem!

An ode is a poetic form praising or glorifying an individual or an event. According to Writer’s Digest there are three types of odes: the Horation; the Pindaric; and the Irregular. You can read more about their details. I chose to share an Irregular ode, for a favorite beverage.

Ode to Morning Jo

I surrender to a cup of bitterness,

burnt,

bubbling,

bursting

on my counter,

demanding my attention.

I beg

like a beaten dog,

believing this next time

you might be kinder;

like a lost lover

ghosted,

tossed aside,

returning to spy,

standby, just in case

you might toss a glance my way;

I sip, then swear,

resolve to seek a substitute

to fill my cup,

lift me up,

that doesn’t require my submission.

Till day dawns

and I catch a whiff,

then flip in surrender,

begging yet again:

the crave, the jolt, the boost you hold,

courage to silence the critic within,

with one small sip.
