Karen is our Poetry Friday host this week!

Back in August, Jan (of Bookseedstudio fame) and I fell all over ourselves trading punny remarks over her wildly wonderful review of Jane Burn’s POEMS ABOUT FOOD. Next thing I know, we committed to a kitchen-calamity poem prompt for one another.

This one’s for you, Jan!

Appliance Aversion

True confession:

I harbor aggression.

I’m appliance-averse

(a wee bit).

Proof of the origins…

FIVE crockpots (in storage bins)!

Wedding gifts all, I admit.

Astounded this cooker confounds me?

Won’t a pot set on low do the trick?

Electric griddle?

A similar riddle–

since a pan works as well

and as quick.

All rave of the time that they save, but…

food processors?

Who can afford them?

And domestically-speaking,

they’re electricity-seeking!

Grab a knife and a cutting board.

Ninjas also lack charm.

Want sculpted Obama arms?

Who needs a trainer?

Food prep’s a no-brainer!

(I wield a whisk with some smarm).

Ice cream once came from a bucket.

No plug to accomplish the feat.

Cranking and churning,

arms would be burning,

–our reward was a group frozen treat.

Now friends

swear by coffee machines

that latte and frappe and mocha their beans.

Newsflash: pour-overs

are NOT new,

moreover

It’s a high price to pay

for caffeine.

Dying to buy a wine fridge?

To lay down bottles to age?

Takes a whole buncha space

… LOL! What a waste!

says the fruit-of-the-gods-Bevmo sage.

No desire

to own an air fryer.

I like veggies straight from the wild.

I feed my starter

(I’m a sourdough martyr)!

No machine for this bread-baking child!

So, now you know why I sweat.

More appliances

equals

more cabinets.

The madness is real…

It would be an ordeal…

It’s a bit of flag-waving…

but it’s money I’m saving…

With a bit of defiance

and self-reliance…

I don’t need one more appliance!
