I had something else planned for today. But when I heard the news, I couldn’t help but feel a bit like the Munchkins in the Land of Oz…
Ding-dong! The Witch is fired!
Which old Witch? The Border Witch!
Ding-dong! The Border Witch is fired!
You heard right, the stars conspired
to gift us with what we desired!
Let’s celebrate! The Border Witch is fired!
She’s gone where bad hearts go.
Her evil bar, set so low.
Yo-ho, let’s open up–– admit that she was mean!
Ding-dong, let friends know,
on Insta, X, and Bluesky posts.
Let them know the Border Witch is fired!
(apologies to E.Y. “Yip” Harburg, the lyricist of the original “Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead”
from the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz.)
It’s PoetryFriday!

Patricia Franz writes picture books and poetry. She believes children, dogs, and sourdough have a lot to teach us about life, joy, and wonder. She has raised two boys, four dogs, and holds a master’s degree in Theology with a focus on children’s spirituality. Patricia, her husband, her Bernese Mountain dog, Bonny, and her sourdough starter split their time between the Arizona desert and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
too funny. what a wonderful poem to wake up with this morning.
Great job, Patricia! But I fear for what/who is following.
You make me giggle. I simply had to sing it. I’m attending a conference & didn’t know until a friend showed me her phone
Nice celebration, Patricia 🙂 Yesterday I saw a video of folks singing a protest song to Kristi Noem to the tune of “Hey! Baby” by Bruce Channel (involves mild cussing). We need all the songs we can get. I don’t think Markwayne Mullin will be any better (he, too, has no morals and can’t find his butt with both hands and a map). Looking forward to when Noem faces consequences for the crimes under her care.
I knew immediately when I saw the title who “the witch” was! Haha, thank you, Patricia.
*thunderous applause* Excellent poem (I was singing along)! The witch may be fired, but her successor could be another sycophant flying monkey . . .
Love it, Patricia! Thanks for this!!
Unfortunately, her successor could easily spend all day singing, “If I Only Had a Brain.” :/
It’s great to have something to celebrate in this awful mess, and music even helps. Good for you for “changing the tune”!
