Thank you, Susan Thomsen for sharing Donika Kelly’s poetic invitation
to see the natural order of things
––to claim the life I want to live.
decoding the world
cryptophonic cosmic cloud,
old growth songs, empty
halls, cosmetic body
politic, dirty
air
digestif, small talk
echo feathers me,
crumples knee, humility–
begs a touch,
set
me

In a world of overwhelm, find a furry friend.
Patricia Franz writes picture books and poetry. She believes children, dogs, and sourdough have a lot to teach us about life, joy, and wonder. She has raised two boys, four dogs, and holds a master’s degree in Theology with a focus on children’s spirituality. Patricia, her husband, her Bernese Mountain dog, Bonny, and her sourdough starter split their time between the Arizona desert and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
To decode this world, I pause, deciding
where to begin.
Oh, terrific, Patricia! I like this decoding. “Begs a touch,” indeed. I just saw that Donika Kelly is reading in NYC tomorrow. I probably can’t make it, but that sure is tempting. (Carol at Apples in My Orchard is rounding up today.)
Your poem has wonderful rhythm and rhyme, Patricia. And I love your quote – Furry friends are the best!
“A world of overwhelm” – this is me at some point at nearly every party — and the “humility begs a touch to set me free” is so lovely and true.
Oooh, intriguing, Patricia. I might have to return to decode a bit more! “cosmetic body politic” – indeed. Happy weekending!
Oh – that was me! Robyn HB :0)
Oh, I love this. I love the way both dog and party-goer need a moment to decode. (I *always* need a moment at a party.) 🙂
